JOHN "MARMADUKE" DAWSON (1945-2009)

John passed away peacefully on July 21, 2009 at the age of 64 in Mexico, where he had retired several years ago. It is with great sadness that we relay this news, and extend our deepest condolences to his family and all his many fans out there.
His songs inspired us in so many ways. His energy, passion and commitment to the New Riders brought us all so much joy over the years. We can all be thankful that his music and legacy will live on forever.

He was way too young to leave this place.

Sad indeed. John was such an integral part of the Riders. Great songs!

May his family have peace and serenity in his passing.
We are living in the future. I'll tell you how I know. I read it in the paper, 15 years ago.

I am deeply saddened by this news...I have been a longtime fan of NRPS...they were one of the earliest concerts I went to ..they opened up for the Grateful Dead...Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ...

very sad news indeed. we did a cover of 'henry' back in the early seventies in my last fulltime band...always a crowd favorite. saw them with the dead many times when jerry garcia doubled with the dead and nrps...fun group and john was a very talented song writer...check out 'garden of eden' at 2001 reunion on their website...

rip marmaduke...

The first four NRPS albums are classics. Its too bad John couldn't/didn't tour as he got older. It would have been fun to hear him again. RIP and condoleneces to his family.
