Chinaberry Sidewalks by Rodney Crowell

I guess it shouldn't be a surprise Crowell would be an articulate author, but it did surprise me. Imagine if Bill Bryson grew up as a Texas redneck. Very candid and honest.

Radiant Angel, the latest novel by Nelson DeMille. I am a bit disappointed with this latest thriller featuring John Corey, an agent with the FBI's Anti-Terroism Task Force (ATTF), who was the main character in several earlier novels. The writing is still sharp, and the plot moves forward at breakneck speed--the story takes place in one day--but the editing leaves something to be desired.

It reads as if an entire major story line about Corey's apparently now-failing marriage has been cut out. Maybe the editor decided such a complex plot line didn't belong in a book that encompasses only one day. But, if so, I wish the editor would have deleted all references to the marriage because, as it stands, the book raises questions about something that had been a big part of the earlier novels (a successful, if sometimes strained, marriage between two ATTF agents) and doesn't answer them.

Bottom line: it is still a great beach read. But budget it for a long holiday weekend as opposed to a week at the shore. At 311 pages, I think this is the shortest DeMille novel yet.
