I agree. More than a musical instrument the Les Paul was a work of art. Indeed, a huge loss but look at what a great life he led and the legacy he leaves behind.

So long, Les.

My cousin was working temporarily in NYC and he called me and told me that I had to come down because he'd found out that Les Paul was playing a weekly gig there. On one of the coldest nights I can remember we went to this smallish club that was located in a basement near midtown and heard Les play. He mostly just accompanied the other players who did the heavy lifting but a few times that night he played a couple of solos and it was something I'll never forget. He played a Les Paul Studio guitar, that much I remember. My cousin was right. I'd regret it if I didn't come down to hear him.

When I was growing up, my Dad would play Les Paul and Mary Ford records. My first thoughts were that nobody's fingers could move that fast.

I am certain that he and Chet are finding a receptive audience up there in Heaven.

I heard the news today...oh boy....

It's not hard for me to trace a line from this (and all) music fan forum(s) nearly directly back to Les Paul. I think it's fair to say that without his brilliant imagination and mechanical prowess, there might never have been rock and roll...or any of its attendant spinoffs. I don't think there's any doubt that he is the father of modern music technology.

you said it studiogirl.

this is a loss of truly historic proportions; the importance of Les Paul simply cannot be overstated. So sorry to hear that he died.
I believe he was still playing once a week at a club in Manhattan, to the present time.

Sadly, I know little of his musical contributions. Like almost anyone with even a casual interest in music, I am very familiar with the guitar bearing his name, his association with Mary Ford and his contributions (innovations!) to the recording aspect of music.

He deserves his place in American music with anyone! A legend...our loss.

We are living in the future. I'll tell you how I know. I read it in the paper, 15 years ago.

Amen!
I was blessed to see him in 2006 at Kean University. What a wonderful evening it was !

HOW HIGH THE MOON
Les Paul & Mary Ford
(written by Nancy Hamilton and Morgan Lewis)

Somewhere there's music
How faint the tune
Somewhere there's heaven
How high the moon
There is no moon above
When love is far away too
Till it comes true
That you love me as I love you

Somewhere there's music
How near, how far
Somewhere there's heaven
It's where you are
The darkest night would shine
If you would come to me soon
Until you will, how still my heart
How high the moon

------ guitar solo ------

Somewhere there's music
How faint the tune
Somewhere there's heaven
How high the moon
The darkest night would shine
If you would come to me soon
Until you will, how still my heart
How high the moon
