We saw Chris Hillman at the Mendocino Music Festival a few years ago. We were out there to see Poco who played later that same evening. It's only my opinion but I thought that Hillman is a marginal talent who happened to be in the Byrds and made a career out of that. I also wasn't much of a fan of the Desert Rose Band.

Marc-

I'm not a huge Hillman fan, but I have enjoyed much of his music through the years. The Hillman - Pederson duo drifts too deep into folk music too often for my taste.

I lean more towards Tim's view than mean Marc (smile)

But what I took from that listen is a reminder of what a great songwriter Gene Clark was. Kudoes to Chris for keeping the sound alive. I will probably pick this one up.

Marc-

As a technical musician, as a guy who has bluegrass leanings, Hillman is a fantastic musician. Outwardly, he isn't very warm and fuzzy. I sense that he lacks the sort of personality of Richie, his old bandmate, for instance. But, as a talent, I certainly respect him.

Chris is one of the pioneers of country rock. He is the glue that held together the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, Souther Hillman Furay (although not for long) and Desert Rose Band. He wrote Have You Seen Her Face, Time Between, Sin City and numerous other excellent songs. At age 72 he sings as well as he ever has, and plays guitar, bass and mandolin certainly better than most of his contemporaries still perfoming.

Having met him numerous times, he has mellowed. He is friendly with fans and, while not as gregarious as Richie, after shows he chats and signs anything put in front of him.

One might not appreciate the mix of country, bluegrass, folk, gospel and rock he plays in concert these days with Herb Pedersen, but to say he is marginal is, well, absurd.

I view Hillman as a key pioneer in folk-rock/country-rock/Americana (or whatever we call it these days). He was the best musician in the Byrds (apologies to McGuinn fans), and the Burritos, Manassas and SHF would not have been as strong (or existed at all) without him. He is certainly not as strong a front-man as Richie, GP, Stills, etc. But he has always made everyone around him better. I look forward to buying the new album.
