I woke up on Saturday morning to find that my DSL modem was fried. Nothing to do to fix it. I ordered another and it is on its way, but it did not come today. I am on dial up!!! If I had a gun right now, I just might use it. When I got my first home computer, it had a "top-of-the-line" 1200 baud modem. Life was sweet. There was no WWW back then, but I could access the mainframe at work and bulletin boards. If the web ever goes down, we are toast. Nut Toast.

I experienced a similar sitution several years ago while on vacation.
The condo we rented listed internet access as part of the package- it was dial up. It was so slow that I could click on a link on the computer located in the back bedroom and while it was connecting walk through the condo to the kitchen fill a glass of water and drink it and go back to the computer and it was still not connected.
Extremely annoying.

Oh yeah, I remember those days, too. That's when my friends asked me what the hell I'd need a 200 MB hard disk for. You won't get a PC with that 'little' memory today!

Wow...Is this ever the truth. The network went down at work the other day, and it stopped everything in it's tracks. Without email and access to the word processing programs, all of the assistants were without the ability to do their work. The attorneys were forced to take to the phones to conduct business. We were forced to fire up the fax machine to send some letters out. Madness, anarchy, consternation reigned until our LA office's IT people woke up, had lunch, and then fixed the damned network. On a personal level, I'm not sure how I survived without a computer, my phone and my music players. You know, I'm old enough to remember transistor radios, phones with rotary dials that sat on tables, and when there were no personal computers. When one thinks about it, it's just plain incredible how we've gone from that to where we are now.
