Sue, Jeanine and I are going to take a vacation the last week of August which is my birthday week. It is going to be my first vacation in years. Nothing fancy mind you just some day trips and such. We're thinking of going to my old stomping grounds in New York, plus Boston, and we're thinking about Rhode Island, which we've never been to. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? We'ed love to hear or read them. John and Sue

Richie Furay band-August 29 at one of the coolest places to hear music:Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River Mass-just over the Rhode Island border. It's a non-profit performance space in the second floor of an ancient mill building right next door to The Battleship Massachusetts (itself is an awesome tourist attraction-an actual battleship that you can explore. I've camped on it a half dozen times with Cub Scouts and I always feel humbled and awed thinking about the men who served on her. You could combine that with an evening show of Richie Furay).
You live in Connecticut and you've never been to RI?
Providence has been greatly restored and they boast a lot of historical buildings and a riverwalk based loosely on the one in San Antonio. They have an event called Waterfire in which they light these bonfires in the river and have music and entertainment. Nothing planned for the last week of August.
Newport is tourista heaven. Mansions that were the summer homes to the rich robber barons of the gilded age. These monuments to excess were only used for several weeks out of the year. Most of them are now museums and each one is a trip to experience. The Newport tourism board has packages you can buy that include a bunch of different attractions. Also, you can walk the Cliff Walk (for free) that hugs the coast and overlooks the beach. The scenery is spectacular and the walk takes you behind a bunch of the mansions.
Let me know if you come by this way and we'll try to hook up. I'll be in town the last week in August as the kids will be getting ready to go back to school.

I actually have a wedding to go to in Rhode Island and plan on taking the kids to the mansion tours...I'll let you know how it is after I get back. Regardless, have fun..any change in scenery from the routine is always good. Annie

John,
I was stationed in Newport from 1976-79. It was a great place back then. I practically could give you a tour of the mansions as I probably went through them over 10 times with friends and families. They also had Jai Alai then which emptied my pockets regularly!!!
If you go to Newport do not miss Ocean Drive, I loved riding my bike out there.
Come to Bethel Woods, or PNC in NJ for a show. Lot of 'Nuts will be there.

Danny,
Great to hear from you, I hope your wife is feeling better after her surgery. We hope to see you again. Perhaps another Hoedown, mini or otherwise. Keep Pocoing in Lima.

Hi JV,
Thanks for asking. We went to see her doctor/surgeon today and the tumor/nodule was benign. Nothing else needs to be done.
Another added benefit is I think she will be sleeping better. Since the surgery she hasn't snored during the night! Before all of this she was always very tired (could be work related) but she wasn't sleeping good. Never even considered it was because of her thyroid problems!
Thanks again...
Leave work early on Friday, Bethel Woods isn't really that far from where you are in CT.
